Why does my computer make strange random noises?

My computer will occasionally just make a bell sound or the sound of an incoming aol instant message but it seems for no reason. I hear the IM sound but nobody actually sent anything. Is this just some random problem or possibly a virus blocking some incoming IMs? I can't seem to find anything on the web about this phenomenon.
